How To Repair Hardware In Computers

Posted on 04:29 by Unknown
Isn't it great when you try to turn on your computer and get, no lights, no sound, and the monitor screen is blank? Frustrating isn't it and it always seems to happens at the worst moment. So you have a dead computer, maybe. Must be time for computer repair 101 or computer diagnoses 101. You know, when your heart sinks into your chest while you're starting to feel nauseated! That pit in your stomach that starting to tighten up and just doesn't want to go away. This is when you start screaming a bunch 0f obscenities that cannot be repeated here. Well, I've been there and I know what it feels like.

I can't teach you all about computer diagnoses in 501 words, but I can give you a few tips. Diagnosing this is relatively easy. Your objective is to find out if the computer is blown out and needs to be replaced or not. Approach it in a systematic fashion. Forget UNIX or windows for the moment. You're dealing now with the system Bios and system processes. Get used to them for they'll make your life a whole lot easier if you do.

All computers upon being powered up go through processes called a P0ST (power on self test). This test if it completes successfully, will result in a booted Operating system. On the other hand, if any part of the P0ST fails, the PC will stop at the point of failure. The bad part about this is that the screen most of the time does not give a good indicator of whats wrong. Most users get a little frustrated when seeing this. To be successful at this you have got to understand what is going on. For example, when you turn the computer on does the fan come on? Thats the one on the back of the power supply next to where the power cord connects to the computer . Power is applied first to the power supply. If the fan works, it's a safe bet that the computers mother board is getting power.

Next comes the fun part. I usually start by removing the side panel to expose the guts of the PC. I disconnect the hard drive, pull out all cards in the expansion bus except the video card, this reduces the computer to its bare essentials. That is a keyboard, a computer case, a power supply and a video card connected to a monitor. You might be asking WHY go to the extreme. Simple, any compote in the system could be causing the computer not to work. By eliminating everything but the essential equipment which is needed to at least get a visual indicator that the computer is operating, trouble shooting and fixing computer problems can be a real drag.

PC virus invades Berlin Defense Computers

Posted on 06:26 by Unknown
A pc virus which has already hit defense computers in Britain and France has spread to German military systems, the Defense Ministry in Berlin(capital of germany) said on Sunday.
The Conficker computer worm has exasperated computer users right around the globe in recent weeks, but security-conscious military users had been thought to be better prepared to repel it.
The spokesman said several German armed forces sites had to be disconnected from the military network after hundreds of computers were taken over by Conficker. However, no other disruptions were reported.

He said army computer recovery specialists and a private company were ridding the computers of the virus.

Microsoft has posted a reward of 250,050 dollars for the capture of the person who spread the virus, which takes over Windows operating systems, attempts to crack passwords and downloads malware from the Internet.

How To Hibernate Your Laptop

Posted on 03:57 by Unknown
The secret behind hibernation is that before you turn off the laptop, everything you're doing with the computer is saved. (The contents of RAM memory are saved to the hard disk.) When the computer is turned on again, it recovers from hibernating by reloading all the saved information and restoring your laptop to exactly the same environment it was in before it was hibernated.

Briefly, hibernation works like this:

1. You activate the hibernation feature.

Hibernation is activated differently depending on how it's set up.

2. The laptop hums as everything in memory is saved to disk.

3. The laptop turns itself off.

It's really and truly off: The battery isn't being used, and it's safe to store the laptop or put it away until you need to use it again.

To recover from Hibernation mode, just turn the laptop on. In some cases, the laptop may recover from hibernation when you press a key or touch the mouse pad. You can try that trick first, before you punch the power button.

Obviously, hibernation plays a key role in prolonging your laptop's battery power. And unlike when you put your laptop in Stand By mode, you can leave your laptop in a hibernated state for as long as you want. Even if the batteries eventually drain, the system returns to where you left it after the computer is plugged in and started again.

Hibernation mode requires hard drive space. So you should be aware that when hard drive space runs low, it's possible that Hibernation mode won't work.

How to turn on Hibernation in Windows xp

In Windows XP, you have to activate Hibernation mode before you can use it. Follow these steps to activate Hibernation:

1. Click the Start button.

2. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.

3. Open the Power Options icon in the Control Panel.

4. In the Power Options Properties dialog box, look for and click on the Hibernation tab.

If you don't see a Hibernation tab, there's your answer: The laptop isn't capable of hibernating. Oh, well.

You might want to check the laptop's Setup program to see whether you can activate Hibernation there.

5. Select the Enable Hibernation option by clicking the check box to place a check mark in the box.

6. Review other options, if they're available.

7. Click OK to confirm the changes and close the Power Options Properties dialog box.

Optionally, close the Control Panel window, as well.

Some laptops may require you to restart Windows for this change to take effect.

Hibernating in Windows XP

Follow these steps to hibernate your laptop in Windows XP:

1. Save your work.

Do this as a precaution; you should always save your stuff. Even so, you don't need to quit any applications now.

2. Click the Start button.

The Start menu appears.

3. Click the Turn Off Computer button.

The Turn Off Computer box-thing appears.

4. Press the Shift key.

The caption beneath the Stand By button changes to read "Hibernate." Keep that Shift key down when you perform Step 5!

If the caption doesn't change, your laptop lacks the Hibernation feature (or you haven't enabled it).

5. Click the Hibernate button.

Before Hiring Tech Support

Posted on 06:49 by Unknown
Today, the hub of the small business and home-based industrialist is the computer system and network. For many users and business owners computers are the lifelines of the company, but what if they suddenly crashed? Will your computer service contract cover faulty work, loss of data, or future problems?

Before signing a contract and allowing an IT freelancer to perform work on your system or network, it is essential to read the fine print. Often times, unprofessional businesses may offer very little in the way of a warranty. Contracts will alert you to those contractors who may not carry the credentials necessary to ensure your future success, and will also alert you to low-quality technical work. It is important to only work with companies who offer reputable computer support services.

Be aware of poorly written computer service contracts
Purchasing computer service contracts can prove to be one of the most important investments you can make in the future of your work. It's equally important however, to find a contractor with substantive training and a solid service contract; otherwise you may be subject to major problems down the road. Avoid this risk by hiring only those professionals who are willing to abide by your contract and take the time to understand what is covered in the contract.
One way to familiarize yourself with these contracts and know what to look for is by previewing samples of computer maintenance agreements which can be found online from companies that produce contract templates. There are several agreement samples available including, computer service network contracts, network service level agreements and subcontractor agreement forms. No matter which agreement best suits your needs, be sure the company has a reputable track record and that the agreements state who is at fault should future problems arise, the timeframes for coverage and how much liability is covered.
When to look for service guarantees
Any time you hire someone to provide computer consulting or technical support, it is essential to request and closely review the computer service contract. Again, researching service contract templates will prepare you for reviewing contracts. A few of the most common agreements include:
* Consulting Services Agreements - This identifies the work to be performed, and defines the terms and price and payment.
* Network Installation and Maintenance Agreement - Details the guarantees and expectations for the stability, safety and security of networks, and liabilities.
* Subcontractor/Independent Contractor Agreement - Ensures subcontracts and independent contractors perform to the specifications outlined in the contract. It also details the scope of work, price and necessary solutions should the work not meet your standards.
Before signing a contract, protect yourself by taking the time to get the facts. Within the fine print of the computer service contract you want to look for clear and concise language that details the terms of service, coverage timeframes and liability coverage. The contract is your key to knowing exactly what you are paying for and who you are working with.

Optimize your PC'S Performance With Windows Registry Repair

Posted on 06:08 by Unknown
Would you like to speed up pc performance, but you are not precisely sure how to do it? There may be a simple answer, and that is to utilize registry repair software on a regular basis. Registry repair software is easy to use, and when used often, it helps to eliminate data on your Windows registry that slows it down, which can optimize pc performance.

Here's how it works: Your windows registry holds the data that comes from the control panel on your computer. All of the hardware and software on your computer has data that is stored on the registry. If you make changes on your control panel, this changes the information stored on the Windows registry. This can be important, predominantly if you often eliminate software from your computer. If a software program is not entirely removed, bits of data will be left on the Windows registry.

These little bits of unneeded data can hinder your computer, slowing it down when you ask it to perform simple tasks such as retrieve and open your e-mail or open and run a software application. A slow computer adds a lot of wasted time to your already busy day, so it makes sense that you will want to improve pc speed.

You can speed up Windows XP and pc optimize performance when you install and use a Windows registry cleaner. This cleaner is a software application that will analyze your registry, search for unused bits of data, and upon your approval, remove them from your Windows registry. When these pieces of unneeded information are removed regularly from the computer, the computer is unimpeded as it sorts through data on the registry and in this way it will improve pc performance.

The trick to optimize pc performance is to find a registry fix that will remove only the items that you want removed. Doing otherwise can lead to devastating results to your computer. It is best to not leave to chance your selection of registry cleaning software, but instead read a registry cleaner review. Reviews can guide you in your selection of cleaning software, helping to ensure that you improve pc performance.

Reviews also give helpful information about how user friendly is the software, and how quickly it will remove unnecessary data from your registry in order to improve pc performance. This is good to know, especially before you spend money on a registry cleaner to enhance pc performance.

Therefore, take a look a knowledgeable reviews of registry cleaners, do some comparisons, and then use the software that will optimize pc performance.
